“Christmas in Brass” Concert: 13th December, 2020

The Concert opened with the March Born is the King,a composition of popular Christmastunes set to a “marching beat”. White Christmas, a “forever” favourite, followed. Dave Curry featured as soloist on Eb Bass with the rather jolly It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Rudolph. Sir Cliff Richard’s hit Mistletoe and Wine was popular and the brass band arrangement of Comfort and Joy added a “touch” of excitement. Leroy Anderson’s A Christmas Festival presented a medley of Christmas tunes. Eleven numbers provided entertainment for the audience in the first half, which concluded with the delightful German number Schneewalzer (Snow Waltz).

The second half opened with Angel Trumpets, a new composition by Richard Phillips. A regular inclusion, popular with the audience, An Australian Christmas (a Suite of Three Movements) followed. Principal cornet Bruce Fletcher featured in Away in a Manger.

Carols included Christians Awake, O Come All Ye Faithfull, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, together with the “evergreen” Silent Night and Rudolph. Ten numbers comprised the second half. As a way of wishing our audience a Merry Christmas, the Concert concluded with Jose Feliciano’sChristmas composition Feliz Navidad (Merry Christmas).

It was really rewarding for the band members to entertain an audience of about one hundred. The audience, in turn, seemed to be thoroughly delighted to be present in this year of Covid restrictions.
