“CNL Brass in Concert”: Sunday 9th August, 2020

This Concert was filled with uncertainty as to the ability to attract an audience (mainly Seniors) in the COVID-19 situation. Despite a limit on attendance (capacity of 300 reduced to 90) with social distancing requirements and adequate sanitising procedures in place, CNL Brass only entertained an audience of twenty-two. Band members were pleased to present the concert – the first for the year. It was certainly appreciated by the few who were present.

Bruce Fletcher, cornet and Doug Hoepper, flugelhorn, feature in Children of Sanchez

Eight numbers comprised the first half, with Julie Loveridge featuring on soprano cornet in an Anne Murray hit, You Needed Me. Children of Sanchez, from the movie of the same name, provided the opportunity for principal cornet Bruce Fletcher and flugel horn player Doug Hoepper to display their musical skill. Battle Hymn of the Republic, a well-known tune written in 1864, concluded the first half.

Joe Sandy, principal trombone, features in Europa

Eight numbers also comprised the second half, commencing with a traditional March, Sons of the Soil. Joe Sandy, principal trombone, featured in the arrangement of Europa, while Breezin’ Down Broadway was well-received. The medley of six No1 hits by Sir Tom Jones was the highlight of the second half.
The Concert concluded with Time to Say Goodbye, a tribute to the band’s principal euphonium, David Walker OAM, who passed away recently.
